Products used
Pomegranate
It is one of the oldest fruits on record and also one filled with great nutritional properties.
Originating in Asia and the Middle East, it spread throughout the world, and Portugal was no exception, the Algarve being the region that produces the most significant quantities. It is one of the most appreciated fruits in autumn and can be used in many ways – ranging from juices to desserts – but it has, for many, a big con: they are difficult to prepare! Regarding its many properties, the DGS writes: “It has a considerable concentration of substances with antioxidant properties, being rich in polyphenols (anthocyanins and tannins), with an antioxidant potential almost three times higher than red wine and green tea. (…) Pomegranate has a low energy value, about 50 kcal per 100g of the edible part. It is also a source of fibre and rich in vitamins and minerals, namely, carotenes, vitamin C, potassium, and iron.
Regions
Alentejo and Ribatejo
Miguel Torga once wrote that “more than enjoying the emotion of an enjoyable trip, whoever visits the Alentejo has to meditate”. Let’s meditate then, as we’re back to the ever charming Alentejo. Land of sea and mountains, its virtue lies in the middle, in the plains, where our product of the week comes from.
